The "AI modified" label shows on pins Pinterest believes were made or changed with AI. It checks the image's hidden data and uses its own detection, which can be wrong. If a real photo was labeled, appeal through Pinterest's help center, and on new pins export images without AI editing data and use your own photos.
What the "AI modified" label is
Pinterest adds a small "AI modified" label to image pins it thinks were created or edited with generative AI. It appears in the bottom-left corner when someone opens the pin up close. It's there so people know what they're looking at, after many users complained about feeds filling up with AI images.
Pinterest also lets people choose to see fewer AI pins in some categories, such as beauty and art. That means a labeled pin can reach fewer people, which is why creators care about getting it right.
How Pinterest decides a pin is AI
It uses two kinds of checks:
- The image's hidden data. Many AI tools and photo editors write a note into the file saying AI was used. Pinterest reads that note.
- Its own detection. Pinterest also runs its own systems to spot AI images that carry no note at all.
Pinterest itself says this detection isn't always accurate. Real photos sometimes get labeled, and some AI images slip through.
Why real photos get the label
If you took the photo yourself and still got the label, it's usually one of these:
| What happened | Why it triggers the label | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| You used an AI edit (remove object, expand, fill) | The editor wrote an AI note into the file | Export a copy without those edits, or accept the label |
| You used an AI upscaler or "enhance" button | Same: the file says AI touched it | Use the original size instead |
| Heavy filters or smoothing | The detection guesses wrong on very polished images | Use a lighter edit and appeal |
| The image came from a stock or supplier site | The original may have been AI-made or edited | Check the source, or use your own photo |
| Nothing you can see | The detection is simply wrong sometimes | Appeal the label |
How to appeal the label
Pinterest has an appeal process for this label in its help center. Search the help center for "AI label" or "Gen AI label" to find the current form, then include the pin link and a short note saying the photo is your own and wasn't made with AI. Appeals are reviewed by a person.
Keep your original file (straight from your camera or phone) in case you need to show it. While you wait, keep posting as normal. One labeled pin won't hurt the rest of your account.
How to avoid the label on new pins
- Start from your own photos: product shots, finished recipes, real rooms, real outfits.
- Skip AI edits on the image itself. Adding text, a logo or a coloured background in a design tool is fine. Generating or changing parts of the photo is what gets flagged.
- Export a fresh copy. When you save from an editor, check for an option to leave out extra data, or export a new file from the original.
- Don't reuse images from AI image sites unless you're happy with the label. If you made it with AI, the honest move is to let it show.
- Make pins people want to save. The label is one signal. A clear, useful pin with a search-friendly title still does the most work.
Is AI-written text a problem?
The label is about images, not words. Using AI to help write your pin title or description doesn't add the label. What matters for text is the same as always: say clearly what the pin is about, using the words people search for. Our Pinterest SEO guide and keywords guide cover how. Does the label hurt reach?
It can. People can choose to see fewer AI pins in some categories, and labeled pins in those categories may be shown to fewer people. Outside those categories the effect is less clear. Either way, real photos tend to earn more trust, saves and clicks, especially for products people want to buy.
If your reach dropped and you're not sure why, the label is only one possible cause. See why Pinterest impressions drop for the others.
Quick answers
Why does Pinterest say my photo is AI when it isn't?
Usually an AI edit or enhance tool left a note in the file, or Pinterest's detection guessed wrong. Export a clean copy and appeal the label.
Can I remove the AI modified label myself?
Not directly. You can appeal through Pinterest's help center, or delete the pin and upload a clean copy of the original photo.
Does Pinterest allow AI-generated pins?
Yes. AI images aren't banned, they're labeled. People can choose to see fewer of them in some categories.
Does using AI for pin titles and descriptions get labeled?
No. The label is about the image. AI-assisted text isn't labeled.
