Pinterest vs Instagram for business: which one brings more traffic? (2026)

Instagram builds a following. Pinterest sends clicks. Here's an honest side-by-side, which one fits your kind of business, and how to use both without doubling your work.

Illustration of two phones side by side: one shows a Pinterest-style grid of tall images, the other an Instagram-style feed of square photos
Short answer

In the Pinterest vs Instagram choice, Pinterest usually brings more website traffic, because every pin can link to a page and people find pins by searching, for months after you post. Instagram is better for building a community, talking to customers in DMs and showing your personality, but links are limited to your bio and Stories. If your goal is visits and sales on your own site, start with Pinterest; if it's relationships and local customers, start with Instagram.

Pinterest vs Instagram: the short answer

Pinterest is a visual search engine. Instagram is a social network. That one difference explains almost everything else in the Pinterest vs Instagram debate.

On Pinterest, people type what they want ("small bathroom ideas", "gifts for gardeners") and Pinterest shows pins that match. They don't need to know you. If your pin answers the search, it gets shown, and one tap takes them to your page.

On Instagram, most of what people see comes from accounts they follow and from Reels the app recommends. You win by being someone people want to keep seeing. Getting them off the app and onto your website takes a few more taps.

Diagram comparing the path to a website on Pinterest and Instagram: on Pinterest someone searches, finds your pin and clicks straight to your page; on Instagram a follower scrolls the feed, sees your post, visits your profile and taps the link in bio
Pinterest: three steps from search to your site. Instagram: four steps, and it starts with someone who already follows you.
  • Pinterest wins for: search traffic from strangers, a clickable link on every pin, posts that keep getting found for months, and people who are planning a project or a purchase.
  • Instagram wins for: building a community, DMs with customers, showing your face and personality, Reels reach, and local businesses whose customers live nearby.

Pinterest vs Instagram users: how big is each in 2026?

Instagram is much bigger. Pinterest is big enough for almost any niche, and still growing.

Pinterest reported 640 million monthly active users in its Q2 2026 results (published August 4, 2026), up 11% from a year earlier. About 106 million of those are in the US and Canada, 157 million in Europe and 377 million in the rest of the world.

Meta stopped reporting user numbers for each app in 2024, so Instagram's figure comes from a one-off statement: in September 2025, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced that Instagram had reached 3 billion monthly users. In the US, Pew Research Center's 2025 survey of American adults found that half of them use Instagram.

So Instagram has roughly four to five times as many monthly users. But raw size matters less than you'd think. What matters is how many of those people are looking for what you offer, and how easy it is for them to reach your site. That's where the two apps differ most.

Pinterest vs Instagram for business: side-by-side comparison

Here's how the two compare on the things a small business actually cares about. Neither column is "better" overall. They are built for different jobs.

Which brings more website traffic, Pinterest or Instagram?

For most businesses, Pinterest brings more website traffic. The reason is simple: every pin is a link, and Instagram posts are not.

When you post on Instagram, the caption under a feed post or Reel can't hold a clickable link. You have to say "link in bio" and hope people tap through. Here are the ways Instagram lets you link out today:

  • Link in bio: you can add up to five links to your profile, a change Instagram rolled out to all accounts in April 2023. Visitors see the first one, plus a note like "and 2 others".
  • Link stickers in Stories: any account can add one. The link lasts as long as the Story, so 24 hours, unless you save it to a Highlight.
  • Link-in-bio pages: tools that turn your one bio link into a small page of links. Handy, but it's one more tap before people reach you.
  • Ads and shopping features: paid ads can carry a link button, and shops can tag products. Those are separate from your normal posts.

On Pinterest, the person who taps your pin and then taps again lands on the exact recipe, listing or blog post they were looking at.

That's also why Pinterest traffic tends to suit websites that earn from visits: blogs with ads, affiliate pages, online shops and digital products. Our guide to Pinterest marketing for small businesses covers how to set it up from scratch.

How long do Pinterest and Instagram posts keep getting views?

An Instagram post does most of its work in the first few days. A pin can keep getting found for months, because people keep searching for the same things.

Pinterest says this directly in its help center: there's no set engagement window for pins, a pin can gain engagement days, months or even years after it's published, and good pins can resurface seasonally. A pin for "Thanksgiving side dishes" can come back every November.

Instagram doesn't publish a lifespan for posts, and in our experience reach comes in a burst. Feed posts and Reels get most of their views soon after posting, unless a Reel gets picked up by recommendations later. Stories disappear after 24 hours.

Illustrative line chart titled How long a post keeps getting views, with an Instagram line that spikes in the first days then drops, and a Pinterest line that builds slowly and keeps going for months
Illustrative, not real data. The shape is what we typically see: Instagram spikes and fades, Pinterest builds and lasts.

This changes the math. On Instagram, you're paid back for a post this week. On Pinterest, you're slowly building a library of pins that work while you sleep. It also means Pinterest feels slow at first: expect three to six months before traffic feels steady. Our post on how the Pinterest algorithm works explains why fresh pins and steady posting matter.

Is Pinterest better than Instagram? What Reddit threads get right

Pinterest isn't better than Instagram in general. It's better for getting found by strangers and sending them to your site. Instagram is better for turning people into fans who buy from you again and again.

If you read "Instagram vs Pinterest" threads on Reddit, the same opinions come up again and again. Most of them are fair, with some caveats:

  • "Pinterest is a search engine, not social media." True, and it's the most useful way to think about it. Your follower count barely matters there.
  • "Instagram reach is dead unless you pay or post Reels." Partly true. Photo posts reach fewer non-followers than they used to, while Reels can still reach new people. Instagram's own leaders have said Reels and recommendations drive much of its recent growth.
  • "Pinterest takes forever to work." True. Most accounts see little for the first month or two. It's slow to start, then steady.
  • "Pinterest traffic doesn't convert." Sometimes true. Many Pinners are early in planning, so they save now and buy later. Linking pins to the exact matching page helps a lot.
  • "Instagram is where my customers actually talk to me." True. Pinterest has messages, but almost nobody uses them for business.
  • "People steal art on Pinterest." A real worry for artists. Reposts happen on both apps; adding your name or site to your images helps people find the source.

The honest summary: Reddit users who love Pinterest usually run blogs or shops and care about clicks. The ones who prefer Instagram usually sell services, sell in person, or care about community. Both are right for their business.

Pinterest or Instagram: which should you choose for your business?

Choose based on where your customers are when they need you. If they search for ideas before buying, start with Pinterest. If they buy because they know and trust you, start with Instagram.

If you sell on Etsy, our step-by-step guide to using Pinterest for Etsy walks through the whole setup, from claiming your shop to writing pins buyers search for.

Pinterest vs Instagram for artists and photographers

For artists and photographers, Instagram is usually where the relationship happens and Pinterest is where the traffic comes from. Most do best with both, used for different things.

Instagram suits artists because people follow artists, not just art. Process videos, studio Stories and replies to comments turn viewers into collectors and commission clients.

Pinterest suits artists who sell prints, digital downloads or tutorials, because people search for things like "boho nursery wall art" or "watercolor flower tutorial" and click through to buy or learn.

  • Wedding photographers: couples plan on Pinterest for months. Pins of real weddings, linked to blog galleries on your site, catch them early.
  • Family and portrait photographers: Instagram for local trust and bookings, Pinterest for posing guides and "what to wear" posts.
  • Stock and landscape photographers: Pinterest for traffic to print shops; Instagram mostly for portfolio and community.
  • Illustrators and painters: Instagram for fans and commissions; Pinterest for print and download sales.
  • Everyone: add your name or website subtly on each image, so reposts still point back to you.

Format tip: Instagram's feed favors portrait images around 4:5, while pins work best tall at 2:3. Crop separately for each instead of posting the same file. Our Pinterest pin size guide has the exact numbers.

Pinterest or Instagram for affiliate marketing?

Pinterest is usually better for affiliate marketing, because you can link each pin to a review or gift guide on your site, and people on Pinterest are already planning what to buy.

On Instagram, affiliate links live in your bio or Story stickers, so you need an engaged audience who trusts your picks and will tap through. That's hard for a new account.

On Pinterest, a brand-new account can earn from affiliate pages if the pins match what people search for. The common setup is: write a helpful page with your links on it, then make several pins that point to that page. Pinning bare affiliate links over and over can look like spam. Our Pinterest affiliate marketing guide covers the rules, disclosure and what to pin.

Pinterest vs Instagram vs TikTok: where does TikTok fit?

TikTok is closest to Instagram Reels: short videos, recommended to strangers by an algorithm, with the biggest reach in the first days. It's great for getting seen fast and weak at sending people to a website.

If you already film short videos, posting the same clip on Reels and TikTok is easy. Then turn that video into pins too, as a short video pin plus a few image pins with stills from it.

Pinterest ads vs Instagram ads

Instagram ads reach more people and give you more ways to target and retarget them. Pinterest ads reach people while they're actively planning, based on what they search for.

Instagram ads run through Meta's Ads Manager, the same system as Facebook. You can target by location, interests and behaviors, and retarget people who visited your site.

Pinterest ads look like normal pins and can target the keywords people search for, along with interests. They tend to suit products people plan ahead for: home, fashion, food, weddings and seasonal gifts.

Our advice is the same for both: don't start with ads. Post free content first, see which posts or pins people actually save and click, then put a small budget behind those. Ads on content nobody likes are an expensive way to learn.

How to use Pinterest and Instagram together

You don't have to pick only one. The easiest way to use both is to make one piece of content and cut it up for each app, instead of making everything twice.

Say you run a baking blog and post a new cinnamon roll recipe. Here's how that one post becomes a week of content:

  1. Publish the full piece on your site first: the blog post, the product listing or the portfolio page. This is where Pinterest will send people.
  2. Film a short video while you make it: the dough rising, the icing going on. Edit it into a 15 to 30 second Reel.
  3. Post the Reel on Instagram with a caption that tells people the recipe is linked in your bio, and add a link sticker to a Story the same day.
  4. Pull three to five still frames or photos from the shoot and turn each into a tall 2:3 pin with a short line of text, like "Overnight cinnamon rolls".
  5. Give each pin a different title using real search words: "easy cinnamon rolls", "make-ahead breakfast for a crowd", "cinnamon rolls without a stand mixer". Our Pinterest SEO guide shows how to find them.
  6. Link every pin to the recipe page itself, not your home page.
  7. Post the pins over one to three weeks, not all at once. A few fresh pins a day is plenty; see how many pins to post per day.
  8. Upload the Reel as a video pin too, linked to the same page.
  9. After a month, check Pinterest analytics for outbound clicks and Instagram Insights for saves and shares, then make more of what worked.

Steps 4 to 7 are the ones most people skip, because making and scheduling pins one by one takes hours. This is the part Pinsevo does: it reads your pages, makes the pins, writes titles with search words, and posts the ones you approve on the schedule you set, so you can keep your energy for Instagram.

Pinterest vs Instagram checklist: pick and start this week

Run through these questions. If you answer yes to most of the first four, start with Pinterest. If you answer yes to most of the last four, start with Instagram.

  • Do you have a website, blog or shop with pages worth sending people to?
  • Do people search for what you sell or write about (recipes, decor, gifts, how-tos)?
  • Would you rather post once and get visits for months than post every day?
  • Do you earn from clicks: ads, affiliate links, product or download sales?
  • Do most of your customers live near you or book in person?
  • Do people buy from you because they know you (coaching, services, art commissions)?
  • Are you comfortable on camera and happy to reply to DMs every day?
  • Is building a loyal community more important to you right now than website traffic?

Whichever you choose, give it three months of steady posting before you judge it. Then add the second app using the one-piece-of-content workflow above.

Quick answers

Is Pinterest better than Instagram for business?

Pinterest is better if you want website traffic, because every pin links to a page and pins keep getting found for months. Instagram is better for local businesses, coaches and creators who sell through relationships, DMs and personality.

How many users do Pinterest and Instagram have?

Pinterest reported 640 million monthly active users in its Q2 2026 results. Meta said in September 2025 that Instagram had 3 billion monthly users.

Which is better for artists, Pinterest or Instagram?

Most artists do best with Instagram for fans and commissions, and Pinterest for traffic to a print or download shop. If you only sell online and hate being on camera, Pinterest is the easier start.

Is Pinterest or Instagram better for affiliate marketing?

Pinterest, for most people. You can link each pin to a review or gift guide on your site, and Pinners are often planning purchases, while Instagram limits links to your bio and Stories.

Can you put links in Instagram posts?

Not in regular feed or Reel captions. You can add up to five links in your bio, link stickers in Stories, and links in paid ads.

Are Pinterest ads cheaper than Instagram ads?

It depends on your niche, audience and season, so test both with a small budget. Pinterest ads fit products people plan ahead for, while Instagram ads offer bigger reach and stronger retargeting.

Should I post the same content on Pinterest and Instagram?

Use the same idea, not the same file. Crop images tall at 2:3 for pins, write search-friendly titles, and link each pin to the matching page on your site.

Is Pinterest, Instagram or TikTok best for a small business?

Pinterest for website traffic, Instagram for community and local customers, TikTok for fast reach with video. Pick the one that matches your main goal and add a second later.
